How many Africans are in the USA ? We are not talking of African “wannabes” but those born and bred in the Dark Continent . There is no authoritative and reliably available figure out there against the backdrop of different ways some African immigrants got to the New World.
According to estimates by the US Census Bureau, about 746, 000 Africans are officially documented as residents of the USA . That is a far cry from what we all know, the number of Africans here are more than that, even Nigeria, the most populous Black nation on earth has more than that in the USA.
In spite of dearth of reliable number of Africans in the USA, the first authoritative Profile Directory of prominent Africans in the USA has been able to wade through the statistical maze to present the world's first Who's Who Of Africans in America: 20005-2006.
BACKGROUND TO THE DIRECTORY : When I relocated from Africa to the US with my family few years ago, I wanted to get in touch with some of my old class mates and acquaintances who are here in America to relive old memories. I searched a lot of resources in order to link up with these Africans, but couldn't find any resource or a directory containing information on these people even though they live here in America . Old folks at “home” way back in Mother Africa would ask: “ Have you seen or spoken to so and so? “ No, I don't know where he/she is.” You replied. “ Aren't you in the same America ?” You are lost for words and sensible explanation. Yes, America is big, very big, but that doesn't mean we should just “dissolve” into this vast land without a trace. That was how the idea of a Profile Directory that would serve as reference information on notable African men and women in America titled: “Who's Who of Africans In America: 2005-2006” came into being.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION : As noted above, not all the 746,000 official estimates of Africans could make our list. We used such criteria as educational attainment, social status, Pan-Africanist credentials, commitment to African cause and other worthwhile achievements. We chose those who were born in Africa, have at least two university degrees, preferably one obtained from an African university and other advanced degrees obtained either in Africa or any where in the world.
There are those who automatically made the list by virtues of their positions here in the United States, here we have Ambassadors and other diplomatic personnel of African countries and those working for international organizations such as The World Bank/IMF, the United Nations and the rest. There are those who, albeit not in the academia but have done Africa proud in their different callings; here we have, musicians, actors/actresses, movie stars, sportsmen and women who were able to make the list.
MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DIRECTORY : This is not just a compilation of names, rather, resumes/curriculum vitae of prominent African men and women in all walks of life in the United States . Inside, we have names, occupations, when and where born in Africa, schools attended with dates, degrees obtained, current and former occupations, books/articles written or co-written, honors, awards, recognition, research activities, and interests, mailing address, telephone, facsimile contacts, email and other relevant information often associated with standard Profile Directories anywhere in the world.
